theKI (pronounced “the-key”) was formed by singer Roxie Sakura & bassist Lucas Francis. The title & concept behind theKI album refers to the Japanese term for the oneness of all life, "Ki". This theme of universal connection is explored throughout the album as a force to empower the self. The album features a collective of LA musicians united for change. The album's lyrics are drawn from the teachings of ancient and modern spiritual leaders, including Eckhart Tolle & Buddha. Their self-titled debut was officially released September 15th, 2015, & fuses rock, neo-soul & funk. ‘theKI’ album received $25K through Kickstarter, & was mixed at Westlake Studios & mastered at Capitol Records.
In February & March 2016, 'theKI' spent 4 weeks on the official CMJ College Radio Top 200 Airplay Chart, peaking at #161. 'theKI' also landed at #13 on the CMJ College Radio Top 20 Adds chart. 'theKI' has received airplay on over 150 radio stations across the US in 45 states, as well as the UK, The Netherlands, Canada, Australia, & Africa. 6 songs from the album have received airplay.
theKI performs for many humanitarian benefits & awareness events, including as headliners for Eve Ensler's One Billion Rising event in Los Angeles, hosted by UN Women. In 2015, theKI received a certificate of recognition from the City of Los Angeles for 'changing the lives of many' through their outreach efforts of frequently performing for human rights awareness & charity events.
theKI completed a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund their debut album, & received over $25,000 from supporters through a promise to create meaningful, beautiful music that would portray the dynamic between light & darkness inherent within personal inner struggle, while emphasizing connection to the oneness of all life. Co-written & co-produced by Roxie Sakura & Lucas Francis, they enlisted their diverse community of like-minded LA musicians for change, including Grammy-winner Osamu Kitajima on koto & session legend Lamont Stacy Sydnor on drums, to record the music of the album. theKI was able to gain the interest of famed Grammy Award-winning mixer David Reitzas (Madonna, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston) to mix the album, & Grammy Award-winning Capitol Records mastering engineer Evren Goknar (Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz) to master the album.
In 2013 theKI headlined for "LA RISING", hosted by the UN Women for One Billion Rising on V-DAY, Eve Ensler's worldwide event involving 1 billion people united in a global strike to create a world free of violence against women & girls. theKI composed & performed "LA Rise" for the event; the song was then licensed for official use by the UN Women LA Chapter.
theKI has also performed for children's education benefits at The Highlands & the Key Club, & headlined at the 2014 SoberDay Los Angeles. theKI was also the featured group at the 2014 International Women's Day in Los Angeles, which was hosted by the union of 5 different Afghans, Iranians & American organizations in LA. theKI also performed at the "Slam up to Violence" event at UnUrban Cafe & Japan Earthquake Benefits at 2nd St Jazz & Fais Do Do.
theKI has performed at many of LA's best venues that include the Viper Room, The Mint,Key Club, The Highlands, Cafe Cordiale, Mile High Club, and Epic Lounge.
After years of making music together, Roxie & Lucas married in July, 2014. Both conservatory-trained musicians from UCLA & USC, respectively, Roxie has toured the world as a vocalist & has a #1 hit in Australia, while Lucas Francis has performed with world-class artists that include John Legend, Sara Bareilles, Yo-Yo Ma, Stevie Wonder, & Wynton Marsalis.
